Earth is unique because it is home to millions of species of life including, of course, human beings.
Also known as the Blue Planet, 70% of its surface is covered in water, although only 3% of this is fresh.
Earth has a powerful magnetic field caused by its nickel-iron core, coupled with its rapid rotation.
The magnetic field protects the Earth from dangerous solar radiation given off by the Sun which can be seen from Earth in the form of the Aurora Borealis.
• Iron filings
• Pole magnet
Iron filings were scattered on a piece of paper and a pole magnet placed in the centre. The filings took the shape of the magnetic field just like the Earth’s field from the North and South Poles.
To visualise the many wonders on Earth in a condensed history, archival film was used. For over 100 years this analogue format has been the primary medium for photographing the amazing world around us.
